This is a tool for creating structured dialogues between users and the computer. With it you can create a wide variety of interactive programs that run both over the telephone and on the desktop. In RAD you drag and drop dialogue states onto a canvas, connect them together, and configure them to do things like play audio files, create animated text-to-speech, recognize spoken language, or display images.

RAD is a great starting point for exploration of the Toolkit. The RAD Quick-Start guide will help to familiarize you with the basic concepts involved in using RAD.

An animated, anatomically correct head. Can be used from within RAD, and in other applications to provide a synchronized visual speech source. You can configure many aspects of the face and save these customize configurations for later use. Baldi belongs to a general class of programs called services.

This program allows you to record a phrase and then animate Baldi with your voice. You can modify the alignment of Baldi's speech with yours and save all of this information as a sound object file (sob). These files can be used from RAD and other applications to provide animated natural speech.

The text-to-speech component of the Toolkit, our version of Festival can currently generate speech in English and Spanish. Festival is commonly used through other programs, rather than being interfaced to directly by the user. It, like Baldi is a service which can run in the background.
